Hindi Meaning

English Meaning

The Anna Yajurveda Mantra declares: 'Food is Brahma (annam brahma), essence is Vishnu (raso vishnuh), the eater is Shiva (bhokta devo maheshvarah). Meditating thus (evam dhyatva), one who eats (tu bhunjeeta) ever remains unattached (naro nityam na lipyate). Never disrespect food (annam na nindyat), this is the vow (tad vratam). Life force is food (prano va annam), body is food-eater (shareeram annadam), in prana the body is established (prane shareeram pratishthitam).' This sanctifies eating as spiritual act.

Spiritual Guidance

Why are Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva all present in food?
Food embodies the complete cosmic cycle: Brahma (creation of food from seed), Vishnu/essence (sustaining life force), and Shiva/eater (transformation through consumption). Recognizing this trinity in food makes eating a complete spiritual act involving creation, preservation, and transformation.
What does 'na lipyate' (remains unattached) mean when eating?
When one eats with awareness of food's divine nature rather than mere sensory gratification, one remains spiritually unattached despite physical action. This transforms eating from binding karma to karma-free offering, maintaining spiritual purity while fulfilling bodily needs.
