Ritu Chakra (ऋतु चक्र)
ऋतु चक्र
In the Vedic tradition, time is cyclical and deeply connected to nature. The Ritu Chakra divides the year into six distinct seasons (Ritus), each lasting two lunar months. This cycle governs our festivals, agriculture, diet, and spiritual practices.
What is a Ritu? (ऋतु क्या है?)
The word 'Ritu' (ऋतु) in Sanskrit means 'fixed or appointed time' and refers to a season. While the Gregorian calendar generally recognizes four seasons, the traditional Hindu calendar identifies six, providing a more granular understanding of environmental shifts and their impact on human physiology and spirituality.
Importance in Sanatan Dharma
The Ritus are not merely climatic shifts; they are considered manifestations of divine energy. Ayurveda bases Ritucharya (seasonal regimens) on these changes to maintain the balance of the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Furthermore, all major Hindu festivals and agricultural cycles are aligned with the Ritu Chakra.
Ritucharya (ऋतुचर्या): Seasonal Regimen
"Ayurveda describes Ritucharya (Ritu = season, Charya = regimen) as a lifestyle and dietary guideline to cope with the bodily impacts of seasonal changes. By understanding the dominant Dosha in each Ritu, one can adopt practices to prevent diseases and enhance vitality."
