Hindu Lunar Months (Māsa)

हिन्दू मास (Māsa)

Unlike the solar Gregorian calendar, the Hindu calendar relies heavily on the lunar cycles (Tithis). A lunar month (Māsa) measures the time it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth, governing festivals, fasting (Vrat), and seasonal transitions.

What are Hindu Lunar Months?

In Sanatan Dharma, time is not merely a linear progression but a cyclical, divine rhythm. A lunar month is calculated based on the phases of the Moon—from one New Moon (Amavasya) to the next, or from one Full Moon (Purnima) to the next. These 12 months dictate the timing of all major Hindu festivals, agricultural cycles, and Ayurvedic practices.

Lunar vs. Gregorian Calendars

The Gregorian calendar is strictly solar, maintaining a fixed 365-day year. The Hindu lunar calendar is roughly 354 days long. To keep the lunar months aligned with the solar seasons (Ritus), an extra month—known as Adhik Māsa (intercalary month)—is added approximately every three years. This brilliant mathematical system ensures that festivals like Diwali always fall in the correct season.

Amanta vs. Purnimanta Calendars

Purnimanta System

The month ends on Purnima (Full Moon). Commonly followed in North India.

Amanta System

The month ends on Amavasya (New Moon). Followed in South India, Gujarat & Maharashtra.

Regardless of the system, festivals always fall on the same lunar day (Tithi).

Hindu Lunar Months FAQs

How many months are in the Hindu calendar?
There are 12 lunar months in a standard Hindu year. However, approximately every 3 years, a 13th intercalary month called 'Adhik Masa' is added to align the lunar calendar with the solar year.
Which is the first month of the Hindu calendar?
Chaitra is the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar, typically falling in March or April. The first day of the Chaitra month is celebrated as the New Year (e.g., Gudi Padwa, Ugadi).
What is the difference between Amanta and Purnimanta?
Amanta calendars start the new month after the New Moon (Amavasya), while Purnimanta calendars start the new month after the Full Moon (Purnima). While the start and end dates differ, the festivals always fall on the same lunar phase (Tithi).
