Quick Answer

The Amarnath Yatra is a major Hindu pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave in Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 3,888 meters, the cave enshrines a naturally forming ice stalagmite revered as the Shiva Lingam. It is believed to be the exact location where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati.

Overview

Surrounded by snowy mountains and treacherous paths, the journey to Amarnath is a profound test of a devotee's faith and endurance. The yatra takes place during the summer months of Shravan (July-August) and attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who chant 'Bam Bam Bhole' to gain the blessings of Baba Barfani.

The Legend of Amar Katha

According to ancient lore, Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva about his garland of skulls and why he is immortal. Shiva decided to tell her the 'Amar Katha' (the secret of creation and immortality). To ensure no one else heard it, he left his bull Nandi at Pahalgam, the moon at Chandanwari, his snake at Lake Sheshnag, and his son Ganesha at Mahagunas Parvat. He created the Amarnath Cave with his trident and narrated the story. A pair of pigeons secretly heard the tale and became immortal; devotees believe they can still be seen near the cave.

The Two Routes: Pahalgam and Baltal

Pilgrims can choose between two main routes: 1. **The Pahalgam Route**: The traditional and longer route (approx. 36-48 km) taking 3-5 days. It offers breathtaking views and goes through Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni. 2. **The Baltal Route**: A much shorter but steeper route (approx. 14 km) that can be completed in 1-2 days. It is physically demanding but saves time.
