In Hinduism, a Jyotirlinga is a devotional shrine where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a 'Lingam' of light. According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva pierced the three worlds as an infinite pillar of light to settle a debate of supremacy between Brahma and Vishnu. There are 12 traditional Jyotirlinga shrines in India, with Somnath in Gujarat considered to be the first.
Overview
For devotees of Lord Shiva (Shaivites), visiting the 12 Jyotirlingas is the ultimate spiritual pilgrimage. It is believed that Lord Shiva physically manifested himself at these twelve locations upon the prayers of his devotees. The 'Dwadasa Jyotirlinga Stotram' by Adi Shankaracharya is a famous prayer that lists all twelve shrines and their locations. Reciting it daily is said to wash away the sins of a lifetime.
The Legend of the Endless Pillar of Light
According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu once argued about who was the supreme creator. To test them, Lord Shiva appeared as a massive, blazing pillar of light (Jyotirlinga) stretching across the universe. Brahma flew upwards as a swan to find the top, while Vishnu dug downwards as a boar to find the base. Neither could find the end. Vishnu admitted defeat, but Brahma lied, claiming he found the top. Shiva then emerged from the light, cursing Brahma that he would never be worshipped, while praising Vishnu's honesty.
