The Elephant God's Birthday

Every autumn, a joyous festive energy fills the streets across India as communities prepare to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi. For ten vibrant days, Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed Lord of Wisdom, is welcomed into homes and decorated public pavilions as the most honored guest of the family.

हर शरद ऋतु में पूरे भारत में एक अनोखा उल्लास छा जाता है जब सभी लोग गणेश चतुर्थी मनाने की तैयारी करते हैं। दस पावन दिनों के लिए, बुद्धि के दाता गणपति बाप्पा का हर घर और मोहल्ले में परिवार के सबसे प्रिय अतिथि की तरह स्वागत किया जाता है।

Families sculpt or invite clay idols of Ganpati Bappa into their homes. Fragrant sticks of incense are lit, fresh red hibiscus flowers are offered, and plates are piled high with steaming sweet modaks filled with coconut and jaggery.

लोग मिट्टी की सुंदर मूर्तियाँ घर लाते हैं। सुगंधित अगरबत्ती जलाई जाती है, लाल गुड़हल के फूल चढ़ाए जाते हैं और नारियल व गुड़ से बने गरमा-गरम मोदकों का भोग लगाया जाता है।

Historically, the great freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak transformed this family ritual into a grand public festival, encouraging people of all backgrounds, ages, and walks of life to gather together in community song, theater, and solidarity.

स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के दौरान, लोकमान्य बाल गंगाधर तिलक ने इस पारिवारिक पूजा को एक भव्य सार्वजनिक उत्सव का रूप दिया, ताकि सभी जातियों और वर्गों के लोग एक साथ मिलकर गीत, नाटक और राष्ट्रभक्ति के सूत्र में बंध सकें।

During these ten days, children perform plays, learn stories of wisdom, and chant together. The festival teaches us that true wisdom brings people together in joyful harmony and community service.

इन दस दिनों में बच्चे नाटक करते हैं, ज्ञान की कहानियां सुनते हैं और एक साथ आरती गाते हैं। यह पावन पर्व हमें सिखाता है कि सच्ची बुद्धि और धर्म हमें समाज में एकता, प्रेम और सेवा के भाव से जोड़ते हैं।
