Holi: The Colors of Devotion

Long ago, there was a cruel demon king named Hiranyakashipu. He wanted everyone in the world to worship him instead of God. But his own little son, Prahlad, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.

बहुत समय पहले, हिरण्यकश्यपु नाम का एक क्रूर राक्षस राजा था। वह चाहता था कि दुनिया में हर कोई भगवान के बजाय उसकी पूजा करे। लेकिन उनका अपना छोटा बेटे, प्रहलाद, भगवान विष्णु का बहुत बड़ा भक्त था।

The King was very angry! 'Stop praying to Vishnu and pray to me!' he shouted. But little Prahlad smiled and kept chanting, 'Om Namo Narayanaya'.

राजा बहुत क्रोधित हुआ! 'विष्णु की प्रार्थना करना बंद करो और मेरी प्रार्थना करो!' वह चिल्लाया। लेकिन छोटे प्रहलाद ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा, 'ओम नमो नारायणाय' का जाप जारी रखा।

The King tried to punish Prahlad many times, but Lord Vishnu always saved the little boy. Finally, the King called his evil sister, Holika. Holika had a magic cloak that protected her from fire.

राजा ने प्रहलाद को कई बार दंडित करने की कोशिश की, लेकिन भगवान विष्णु ने हमेशा छोटे लड़के को बचाया। अंत में, राजा ने अपनी दुष्ट बहन होलिका को बुलाया। होलिका के पास एक जादुई लबादा था जो उसे आग से बचाता था।

The King ordered Holika to sit in a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap. He thought Holika would be safe, and Prahlad would burn. But as they sat in the fire, Prahlad kept praying to Lord Vishnu.

राजा ने होलिका को प्रहलाद को अपनी गोद में लेकर धधकती आग में बैठने का आदेश दिया। उसने सोचा कि होलिका सुरक्षित रहेगी, और प्रहलाद जल जाएगा। लेकिन जैसे ही वे आग में बैठे, प्रहलाद भगवान विष्णु की प्रार्थना करते रहे।

A miracle happened! A strong wind blew the magic cloak off Holika and wrapped it around little Prahlad. The evil Holika burned in the fire, but Prahlad walked out completely safe, smiling and chanting!

एक चमत्कार हुआ! एक तेज हवा ने जादुई लबादे को होलिका के ऊपर से उड़ा दिया और उसे छोटे प्रहलाद के चारों ओर लपेट दिया। दुष्ट होलिका आग में जल गई, लेकिन प्रहलाद मुस्कुराते हुए और जप करते हुए पूरी तरह सुरक्षित बाहर आ गया!

This is why we light a bonfire on the night before Holi—it is called Holika Dahan, marking the burning of evil. And the next day, we celebrate Prahlad's safe return by throwing bright, joyful colors!
