Why the Moon Got a Scolding!
“Why did Ganpati Bappa get angry and curse the Moon? 🌙😡”
One evening, after eating a huge feast of sweet Modaks, Lord Ganesha was riding his little mouse, Mooshak, back home.
एक शाम, मीठे मोदक की बड़ी दावत खाने के बाद, भगवान गणेश अपने छोटे चूहे, मूषक की सवारी करते हुए घर वापस जा रहे थे।
Suddenly, a snake crossed their path! Mooshak got scared and jumped, causing Ganesha to fall off with a loud THUD! All the sweet Modaks spilled out of his big tummy.
अचानक, एक साँप उनके रास्ते में आ गया! मूषक डर गया और उछल पड़ा, जिससे गणेश जी ज़ोर की आवाज़ के साथ नीचे गिर गए! उनके बड़े पेट से सारे मीठे मोदक बाहर गिर गए।
Ganesha quickly gathered the sweets, put them back, and tied the snake around his tummy like a belt to hold them in.
गणेश जी ने जल्दी से मिठाइयाँ इकट्ठी कीं, उन्हें वापस रखा, और उन्हें रोकने के लिए साँप को अपने पेट के चारों ओर बेल्ट की तरह बांध लिया।
High up in the sky, the Moon God (Chandra) was watching. Instead of helping, the Moon started laughing loudly at Ganesha! He was very proud of his glowing beauty and made fun of Ganesha's round tummy.
आकाश में ऊँचाई पर, चंद्र देव देख रहे थे। मदद करने के बजाय, चंद्रमा गणेश जी पर ज़ोर से हँसने लगा! उसे अपनी चमकती सुंदरता पर बहुत गर्व था और उसने गणेश जी के गोल पेट का मज़ाक उड़ाया।
Ganesha became very angry at the Moon's arrogance. He broke off a piece of his tusk, threw it at the Moon, and cursed him: 'You are too proud of your light! From today, your light will fade away, and no one will ever look at you on my birthday (Ganesh Chaturthi)!'
चंद्रमा के अहंकार पर गणेश जी बहुत क्रोधित हुए। उन्होंने अपने दांत का एक टुकड़ा तोड़ा, उसे चंद्रमा पर फेंका, और उसे श्राप दिया: 'तुम्हें अपने प्रकाश पर बहुत गर्व है! आज से, तुम्हारा प्रकाश फीका पड़ जाएगा, और मेरे जन्मदिन (गणेश चतुर्थी) पर कोई भी तुम्हें नहीं देखेगा!'
The Moon realized his terrible mistake and begged for forgiveness. Ganesha, being kind, reduced the curse. That is why the moon waxes and wanes, and we avoid looking at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi.
चंद्रमा को अपनी भयानक गलती का एहसास हुआ और उसने माफी मांगी। गणेश जी ने दयालु होकर श्राप कम कर दिया। यही कारण है कि चंद्रमा घटता और बढ़ता है, और हम गणेश चतुर्थी पर चंद्रमा को देखने से बचते हैं।

Message for Families
The moon represents the flickering, proud mind. Ganesha (wisdom) teaches us that a mind proud of superficial beauty cannot contain true spiritual knowledge.
