Why the Moon Got a Scolding!

On a pleasant autumn evening, Lord Ganesha had visited his devotees, who had lovingly offered him baskets of sweet, fragrant modaks. His round tummy was happily full, and his pouch was packed with treats as he set off for home.

शरद ऋतु की एक सुखद शाम को, भगवान गणेश अपने भक्तों से मिलकर लौट रहे थे, जिन्होंने उन्हें प्रेम से सुगंधित मोदकों की टोकरियां भेंट की थीं। उनका गोल पेट तृप्त था और उनकी पोटली भी मिठाइयों से भरी हुई थी।

Riding atop his faithful companion, Mooshak the mouse, Ganesha ambled along a quiet forest path under the starry night sky. Mooshak hummed a cheerful tune as he trotted along the grass.

अपने नन्हें साथी मूषक पर सवार होकर, गणेशजी तारों भरे आसमान के नीचे एक शांत पगडंडी से गुजर रहे थे। मूषक घास पर मस्ती से दौड़ते हुए गुनगुना रहा था।

Suddenly, a long striped serpent slithered across the dusty track! Mooshak gave a frightened squeak, leaped into the air, and Ganesha lost his balance, tumbling onto the soft grass with a comical thud.

अचानक, एक लंबा धारीदार सांप रास्ते में आ गया! मूषक डर के मारे उछल पड़ा, जिससे गणेशजी का संतुलन बिगड़ गया और वे एक हल्की सी धम्म की आवाज के साथ नरम घास पर गिर पड़े।

Ganesha's pouch loosened, and sweet modaks rolled across the moss. Chuckling softly, Ganesha dusted his knees and gathered the sweets. Seeing the frightened serpent trembling by the bushes, Ganesha gently picked it up and tied it around his round waist like a friendly belt, patting his tummy with satisfaction.

गणेशजी की पोटली खुल गई और मोदक घास पर बिखर गए। गणेशजी मुस्कुराते हुए उठे, अपने घुटने झाड़े और मिठाइयों को समेटा। झाड़ियों में थरथराते सांप को देखकर उन्होंने उसे प्यार से उठाया और अपने पेट पर एक बेल्ट की तरह बांध लिया।

High above in the heavens, Chandra, the glowing Moon God, had been watching. Believing himself to be the most handsome being in the universe, the Moon began to laugh haughtily. 'Look at that plump little deity tumbling off a mouse!' he mocked, his cold silver light radiating arrogance.

आकाश में ऊंचे बैठे चंद्र देव यह सब देख रहे थे। खुद को ब्रह्मांड का सबसे सुंदर रूप मानने वाले चंद्रमा को अपने रूप पर बहुत घमंड था। वे अहंकार से हंसने लगे, 'देखो, उस गोल-मटोल बालक को, जो एक छोटे से चूहे से गिर गया!'

Ganesha looked up, his large ears twitching with disappointment. Arrogance and making fun of others had no place in the world. Ganesha calmly plucked a tip of his broken tusk and hurled it toward the heavens, striking the Moon. 'You are blinded by your pride,' Ganesha declared. 'May your light vanish from the night!'

गणेशजी ने ऊपर देखा, उनके बड़े कान हिलने लगे। किसी का उपहास उड़ाना और घमंड करना सर्वथा अनुचित था। गणेशजी ने शांति से अपने टूटे दांत का एक टुकड़ा चंद्रमा की ओर फेंका। 'तुम्हें अपने रूप और प्रकाश पर बहुत अभिमान है,' गणेशजी ने कहा। 'तुम्हारा यह प्रकाश रात के आकाश से गायब हो जाए!'

Instant darkness enveloped the sky. Shivering in the cold dark, the Moon realized how shallow his vanity was. He pleaded for forgiveness with folded hands.

आकाश में गहरा अंधेरा छा गया। उस ठंडे अंधेरे में चंद्रमा को अपने खोखले घमंड का अहसास हुआ। उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर क्षमा की याचना की।

Seeing his genuine remorse, kind-hearted Ganesha softened the curse: 'Your light shall not disappear forever, but you will wax and wane every month as a reminder of humility. And on Ganesh Chaturthi, anyone who looks upon you shall be reminded never to ridicule others.'

चंद्रमा का सच्चा पश्चाताप देखकर दयालु गणेशजी ने श्राप को कम कर दिया: 'तुम्हारा प्रकाश हमेशा के लिए समाप्त नहीं होगा, लेकिन विनम्रता की सीख के रूप में तुम हर महीने घटते और बढ़ते रहोगे। और गणेश चतुर्थी के दिन तुम्हें देखकर लोग यह याद रखेंगे कि कभी किसी का उपहास नहीं उड़ाना चाहिए।'
