How Did Lord Ganesha Get His Elephant Head?

High atop Mount Kailash, where the mountain mist drifted through cedar trees, Mata Parvati wished to take a quiet bath in the sacred lotus pond. But with Lord Shiva away in deep meditation and the attendants busy, there was no trusted guardian to watch the palace gateway.

कैलाश पर्वत की ऊंचाइयों पर, जहां देवदार के पेड़ों के बीच धुंध तैरती थी, माता पार्वती पवित्र कमल सरोवर में स्नान करना चाहती थीं। लेकिन भगवान शिव ध्यान में लीन थे और गण अपने कार्यों में व्यस्त थे, इसलिए महल के मुख्य द्वार पर कोई भरोसेमंद पहरेदार नहीं था।

Using pure turmeric and sandalwood paste, she lovingly sculpted a bright, handsome young boy and breathed life into him. The boy opened his sparkling eyes, bowed to her, and smiled with radiant warmth.

हल्दी और चंदन के शुद्ध लेप से उन्होंने बड़े प्यार से एक सुंदर बालक की मूरत बनाई और उसमें प्राण फूंक दिए। बालक ने अपनी चमकीली आंखें खोलीं, माता को नमन किया और प्रेम से मुस्कुराया।

'You are my dearest son,' Mata Parvati said affectionately, handing him a wooden staff. 'Stand bravely at the palace gate. Allow no one inside until I finish my bath.' The boy nodded with firm resolve, planting his feet like solid rock.

'तुम मेरे प्यारे पुत्र हो,' माता पार्वती ने उसे एक छड़ी सौंपते हुए स्नेह से कहा। 'महल के द्वार पर बहादुरी से खड़े रहो। जब तक मैं स्नान न कर लूं, किसी को अंदर मत आने देना।' बालक ने दृढ़ संकल्प के साथ सिर हिलाया और एक मजबूत चट्टान की तरह द्वार पर खड़ा हो गया।

Shortly after, Lord Shiva returned from his meditation. When he moved to enter his home, the young boy stepped forward, holding out his staff. 'Halt! You cannot pass. My mother has forbidden anyone from entering.'

कुछ ही देर बाद, भगवान शिव अपनी साधना से लौटे। जैसे ही वे अपने घर में प्रवेश करने लगे, उस बालक ने आगे बढ़कर अपनी छड़ी अड़ा दी। 'रुकिए! आप अंदर नहीं जा सकते। मेरी माता ने किसी को भी भीतर जाने से मना किया है।'

Lord Shiva did not know this boy was Parvati's son, and the boy had never met Shiva. When the attendants tried to push past, the boy stood undefeated, defending his mother's word with fierce courage. In the terrible clash that followed, Shiva's trident severed the boy's head.

भगवान शिव को नहीं पता था कि यह बालक पार्वती का पुत्र है, और बालक ने भी कभी शिवजी को नहीं देखा था। जब गणों ने अंदर जाने की कोशिश की, तो बालक ने अपनी माता के वचन की रक्षा के लिए अद्भुत साहस दिखाया। इसके बाद हुए भीषण विवाद में, शिवजी के त्रिशूल से बालक का सिर कट गया।

When Mata Parvati emerged and saw her fallen son, a storm of divine sorrow shook the mountains. She declared that the cosmos itself would lose its balance unless her beloved boy was restored to life.

जब माता पार्वती बाहर आईं और अपने पुत्र को देखा, तो उनके अपार शोक से पर्वत कांप उठे। उन्होंने कहा कि जब तक उनके प्यारे पुत्र को पुनर्जीवित नहीं किया जाता, तब तक सृष्टि में शांति नहीं हो सकती।

Realizing the tragic mistake, Lord Shiva acted with deep compassion. He sent his followers to bring the head of the first living creature they encountered resting facing north—a majestic, wise elephant who peacefully surrendered its life for the sacred purpose.

अपनी भूल का अहसास होने पर, भगवान शिव ने करुणा से कदम उठाया। उन्होंने अपने गणों को उत्तर दिशा की ओर सिर करके सो रहे पहले जीव का सिर लाने भेजा—उन्हें एक विशाल, बुद्धिमान गजराज मिला जिसने इस पावन कार्य के लिए सहर्ष अपना शीश अर्पित कर दिया।

Gently, Shiva placed the elephant head onto the boy's shoulders and breathed life back into him. The child blinked open his kind eyes, and Lord Shiva embraced him warmly: 'You are Gajanana, leader of all beings. Your great elephant head shall symbolize supreme intellect, and you shall be loved and worshipped before all other gods.'

भगवान शिव ने कोमलता से वह हाथी का सिर बालक के धड़ पर रखा और उसमें पुनः प्राण फूंक दिए। बालक ने अपनी दयालु आंखें खोलीं, और शिवजी ने उसे गले से लगा लिया: 'तुम गजानन हो, समस्त गणों के स्वामी। तुम्हारा यह विशाल गजमुख परम बुद्धि का प्रतीक होगा, और सभी देवताओं से पहले तुम्हें पूजा जाएगा।'
