Why is Ganesha Called Ekadanta (One-Tusked)?

A very long time ago, the great Sage Ved Vyasa wanted to write the epic story of the Mahabharata. But the story was so huge and complex that he needed someone incredibly smart and fast to write it down while he spoke.
बहुत समय पहले, महान ऋषि वेद व्यास महाभारत की महाकाव्य कहानी लिखना चाहते थे। लेकिन कहानी इतनी विशाल और जटिल थी कि उन्हें किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति की आवश्यकता थी जो उनके बोलते समय इसे लिखने में अविश्वसनीय रूप से स्मार्ट और तेज हो।
He prayed to Lord Brahma, who suggested, 'Ask Lord Ganesha. He is the God of Wisdom!'
उन्होंने भगवान ब्रह्मा से प्रार्थना की, जिन्होंने सुझाव दिया, 'भगवान गणेश से पूछें। वह ज्ञान के देवता हैं!'
Ganesha agreed to be the writer, but he had one fun condition. 'O Sage, I will write the story, but my pen must never stop. If you pause while speaking, I will drop my pen and leave!'
गणेश जी लेखक बनने के लिए सहमत हो गए, लेकिन उनकी एक मजेदार शर्त थी। 'हे ऋषि, मैं कहानी लिखूंगा, लेकिन मेरी कलम कभी नहीं रुकनी चाहिए। यदि आप बोलते समय रुकते हैं, तो मैं अपनी कलम छोड़ दूंगा और चला जाऊंगा!'
Sage Vyasa smiled and replied, 'I accept! But you must understand the meaning of every verse before you write it down.' Ganesha smiled and agreed.
ऋषि व्यास मुस्कुराए और बोले, 'मुझे स्वीकार है! लेकिन तुम्हें इसे लिखने से पहले हर श्लोक का अर्थ समझना होगा।' गणेश जी मुस्कुराए और सहमत हो गए।
The writing began. Sage Vyasa spoke quickly, and Ganesha wrote even faster! But suddenly, a big problem happened. Bappa's feather pen broke! Snap!
लेखन शुरू हुआ। ऋषि व्यास तेजी से बोलते गए, और गणेश जी ने और भी तेजी से लिखा! लेकिन अचानक, एक बड़ी समस्या हो गई। बाप्पा की कलम टूट गई! स्नैप!
If he stopped to find another pen, he would break his own rule. What could he do? Without thinking twice, little Ganesha reached up, snapped off his right tusk, dipped it in ink, and continued writing!
अगर वह दूसरी कलम खोजने के लिए रुकते, तो वे अपना ही नियम तोड़ देते। वह क्या कर सकते थे? दो बार सोचे बिना, छोटे गणेश ने अपना दाहिना दांत तोड़ लिया, उसे स्याही में डुबोया, और लिखना जारी रखा!
He sacrificed his beautiful tusk so that the greatest knowledge could be saved for the world. Because of this, he is lovingly called Ekadanta (एकदन्त), the Lord with one tusk.
उन्होंने अपने सुंदर दांत का बलिदान दे दिया ताकि दुनिया के लिए सबसे महान ज्ञान को बचाया जा सके। इस वजह से, उन्हें प्यार से एकदन्त कहा जाता है, एक दांत वाले भगवान।
