A Friendship More Valuable Than Gold

During their boyhood years at the ashram of Sage Sandipani in Ujjain, young Prince Krishna and a poor, simple Brahmin boy named Sudama became the closest of friends. They shared chores, collected firewood in the rain, and read the sacred scriptures side by side, bound by pure affection.

उज्जैन में महर्षि सांदीपनि के गुरुकुल में पढ़ाई के दौरान, राजकुमार कृष्ण और एक सीधे-सादे निर्धन बालक सुदामा के बीच गहरी मित्रता हो गई। वे साथ में जंगल से लकड़ियां लाते, आश्रम के काम करते और साथ में पढ़ाई करते थे—उनका रिश्ता सच्चे प्रेम पर टिका था।

Years rolled by. Krishna became the majestic King of the wealthy coastal city of Dwarka, living in marble palaces of gold. Sudama lived in a tiny, leaking thatched hut with his devoted wife and children, surviving on whatever simple grains were offered each day.

वर्ष बीत गए। कृष्ण द्वारका के भव्य सोने के महलों के राजा बन गए। वहीं सुदामा अपनी पत्नी और बच्चों के साथ एक टूटी-फूटी झोपड़ी में रहते थे, और जो कुछ रूखा-सूखा मिल जाता उसी में संतोष करते थे।

One day, seeing their children sleep hungry, Sudama's wife gently urged him: 'Your childhood friend is the King of Dwarka, renowned for his boundless generosity. Go visit him, not to beg, but simply to see your friend.'

एक दिन, बच्चों को भूखा सोता देखकर सुदामा की पत्नी ने उनसे कहा: 'आपके बचपन के मित्र द्वारका के राजा हैं, जो अपनी उदारता के लिए जाने जाते हैं। आप उनसे मिलने जाइये, कुछ मांगने के लिए नहीं, बस अपने मित्र के दर्शन के लिए।'

Sudama hesitated to go empty-handed. Searching the house, his wife tied a handful of dry, pounded beaten rice (Poha) into a tattered piece of cloth. Clothed in patched rags, Sudama walked barefoot all the way to the towering gates of Dwarka.

सुदामा खाली हाथ जाने में संकोच कर रहे थे। उनकी पत्नी ने घर में रखा मुट्ठी भर पोहा (चिवड़ा) एक फटे हुए कपड़े में बांधकर पोटली बना दी। फटे वस्त्र पहने, सुदामा नंगे पैर चलकर द्वारका के विशाल राजमहल के द्वार पर पहुंचे।

When guards announced that a poor traveler named Sudama was at the gate, King Krishna leaped up from his golden throne! He ran barefoot down the marble corridors, threw his arms around Sudama, and brought him inside with royal honor.

जब पहरेदारों ने सूचना दी कि सुदामा नाम का एक गरीब व्यक्ति द्वार पर खड़ा है, तो राजा कृष्ण अपने सिंहासन से कूद पड़े! वे नंगे पैर दौड़ते हुए बाहर आए, सुदामा को गले से लगा लिया और उन्हें आदरपूर्वक भीतर ले आए।

Krishna gently seated Sudama upon his throne, washed his friend’s dusty, blistered feet with warm tears of love, and noticed the little rag tucked beneath Sudama’s arm. 'What delicious gift has sister sent for me?' Krishna asked joyfully, untying the bundle and eating the dry rice with pure relish.

कृष्ण ने सुदामा को अपने सिंहासन पर बैठाया, प्रेम के आंसुओं से उनके थके हुए चरण धोए, और सुदामा की कांख में दबी छोटी सी पोटली देख ली। 'भाभी ने मेरे लिए क्या उपहार भेजा है?' कहकर कृष्ण ने वह पोटली खोली और उस सूखे पोहे को बड़े चाव से खाया।

Sudama spent the night sharing sweet childhood memories, asking for nothing. When he returned home the next evening, his humble hut had vanished—in its place stood a radiant mansion, and his family was dressed in fine clothes, filled with abundance! True friendship knows neither wealth nor status; it honors only the pure devotion of the heart.

सुदामा ने बिना कुछ मांगे रात भर बचपन की बातें कीं। जब वे अगले दिन लौटे, तो देखा कि उनकी टूटी झोपड़ी की जगह एक भव्य महल खड़ा था, और उनका परिवार सुखी व संपन्न था! सच्ची मित्रता धन या पद नहीं देखती; वह केवल हृदय के पवित्र प्रेम को पहचानती है।
