The Hero Who Lifted a Mountain

Every autumn in the verdant pastures of Vrindavan, the cowherd families gathered bushels of grain, golden sweets, and rich milk to perform a colossal feast in honor of Lord Indra, the God of Rain and Heavens. They believed that without pleasing Indra, the skies would withhold rain.

हर शरद ऋतु में वृंदावन के हरे-भरे मैदानों में, ग्वाले और ग्रामीण देवराज इंद्र के सम्मान में एक विशाल दावत की तैयारी करते थे। उनका मानना था कि यदि इंद्र देव को प्रसन्न न किया गया, तो वे बारिश नहीं करेंगे और सूखा पड़ जाएगा।

Seven-year-old Krishna questioned this tradition: 'Why should we worship distant pride, father? It is our sacred Govardhan Mountain that shelters our cows, provides green grass, fresh springs, and lush forest timber. Our true duty (Dharma) is to honor nature that nourishes us daily.'

सात साल के कृष्ण ने इस पर प्रश्न उठाया: 'पिताजी, हमें दूर बैठे घमंडी देवता की पूजा क्यों करनी चाहिए? यह हमारा पावन गोवर्धन पर्वत है जो हमारी गायों को हरी घास, झरने का मीठा पानी और छायादार वन देता है। हमारा सच्चा धर्म प्रकृति का सम्मान करना है जो हमें रोज पोषण देती है।'

Convinced by Krishna’s wisdom, the villagers joyfully carried their offerings to Mount Govardhan instead. High up in the heavens, Lord Indra was blinded by fury: 'How dare mere cowherds ignore the King of Gods on the advice of a small child?'

कृष्ण की समझदारी से सहमत होकर ग्रामीणों ने अपनी सारी भेंट गोवर्धन पर्वत को अर्पित कर दी। स्वर्ग में यह देखकर इंद्र क्रोध से आगबबूला हो गए: 'एक छोटे से बालक के कहने पर इन साधारण ग्वालों ने देवराज इंद्र का अपमान करने का साहस कैसे किया?'

Indra summoned the fearsome storm clouds of destruction, the Samvartaka, and unleashed a terrifying tempest over Vrindavan. Dark thunder cracked, torrential sheets of rain flooded the lanes, and lightning tore across the sky as villagers and cattle cried out in fear.

इंद्र ने प्रलयंकारी बादलों को बुलाया और पूरे वृंदावन पर मूसलाधार बारिश और भयंकर तूफान बरसा दिया। बिजली कड़कने लगी, नदियां उफनने लगीं और भयभीत ग्रामीण व गायें सहायता के लिए पुकारने लगे।

'Do not fear,' little Krishna smiled serenely. Walking calmly to the base of Mount Govardhan, he effortlessly scooped the colossal mountain up with the little finger of his left hand, holding it high in the sky like a giant emerald umbrella!

'डरो मत,' छोटे कृष्ण ने शांत मुस्कान के साथ कहा। वे गोवर्धन पर्वत के पास पहुंचे और उन्होंने अपने बाएं हाथ की नन्हीं उंगली पर उस विशाल पहाड़ को ऐसे उठा लिया जैसे कोई छाता हो!

For seven days and seven nights, the entire population of Vrindavan—men, women, children, cows, deer, and birds—stood safely beneath the shelter of the mountain while Krishna smiled without feeling the slightest strain.

सात दिन और सात रात तक वृंदावन के सभी लोग, बच्चे, गायें और पशु-पक्षी उस पर्वत की शीतल छांव में सुरक्षित खड़े रहे, जबकि कृष्ण बिना किसी थकान के मुस्कुराते रहे।

Exhausted and thoroughly humbled, Indra stopped the rains and descended from the heavens, falling at Krishna’s feet to beg for forgiveness. Krishna proved that God protects those who honor nature and that humility always triumphs over arrogant pride.

थक-हारकर और लज्जित होकर इंद्र ने तूफान रोक दिया। वे स्वर्ग से नीचे उतरे और कृष्ण के चरणों में गिरकर क्षमा मांगी। कृष्ण ने दिखा दिया कि जो प्रकृति और धर्म का सम्मान करते हैं, भगवान उनकी रक्षा सदा करते हैं।
