The Challenge of the Heavy Bow

In the royal palace of Mithila, King Janaka arranged a grand assembly of warriors, princes, and kings from across the lands for the Swayamvara of his wise and virtuous daughter, Princess Sita.

मिथिला के राजदरबार में, राजा जनक ने अपनी सुशीला और विदुषी पुत्री सीता के स्वयंवर के लिए देश-विदेश से पराक्रमी राजाओं और राजकुमारों की एक भव्य सभा बुलाई।

At the center of the vast assembly hall rested a colossal iron chest mounted upon eight wheels. Inside lay the ancient, sacred bow of Lord Shiva, known as Pinaka. It was so heavy that hundreds of strong men strained just to roll the chest into the hall!

दरबार के बीचों-बीच आठ पहियों वाली लोहे की एक भारी पेटी रखी थी। इसके भीतर भगवान शिव का पावन धनुष पिनाक रखा हुआ था। यह धनुष इतना विशाल और भारी था कि उस संदूक को खींचने के लिए भी सैकड़ों बलवान सैनिकों को पसीना बहाना पड़ता था!

King Janaka announced the challenge: 'Whoever can lift this divine bow, bend it, and string its cord shall win the hand of Princess Sita in marriage!'

राजा जनक ने घोषणा की: 'जो भी वीर इस दिव्य धनुष को उठाकर इस पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ा देगा, उसी के साथ राजकुमारी सीता का विवाह होगा!'

Mighty kings puffed their chests and stepped forward. One by one, proud warriors tried to lift the bow. Some could not move it an inch; others strained until their faces turned red and their crowns fell to the floor in embarrassment. Even when groups of warriors pulled together, the bow remained unmoved like a mountain.

बड़े-बड़े अहंकारी राजा सीना तानकर आगे आए। एक-एक करके उन्होंने धनुष उठाने की कोशिश की। कई तो इसे हिला भी नहीं सके; कुछ का चेहरा जोर लगाते-लगाते लाल हो गया और उनके मुकुट गिर पड़े। कई राजाओं ने मिलकर भी खींचा, लेकिन वह धनुष किसी पहाड़ की तरह अपनी जगह पर अचल रहा।

King Janaka sighed in deep despair, wondering if chivalry had vanished from the earth. At that moment, Sage Vishwamitra turned with a calm smile to young Prince Rama: 'Rise, my child. Go string the bow of Shiva.'

राजा जनक निराश होकर बोले कि क्या धरती वीरों से खाली हो गई है? तभी महर्षि विश्वामित्र ने मुस्कुराते हुए युवा राजकुमार राम से कहा: 'उठो राम, जाओ और शिवजी के इस धनुष पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाओ।'

With calm modesty and hands folded, Rama walked gracefully to the chest. He bowed to the sacred bow, touched it with reverent fingers, and effortlessly lifted it with one hand as if it were a garland of flowers!

बड़ी विनम्रता और सहजता से राम आगे बढ़े। उन्होंने पावन धनुष को प्रणाम किया, आदर से उसे छुआ और एक हाथ से उसे ऐसे उठा लिया जैसे फूलों की माला हो!

As Rama pulled the bowstring to hook it, the immense bow bent and snapped with a thunderous roar: CRACK! The ground shook, flowers rained from heaven, and a collective gasp of wonder echoed through the hall. Rama had proven that true strength is quiet, humble, and blessed by righteousness.

जैसे ही राम ने प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाने के लिए धनुष को झुकाया, वह भारी धनुष बीच से तड़ककर टूट गया: कड़क! चारों ओर जयकार गूंज उठी, आकाश से फूलों की वर्षा होने लगी। राम ने दिखा दिया कि असली शक्ति घमंड में नहीं, बल्कि विनम्रता और ईश्वर के आशीर्वाद में होती है।
