The Promise of a Prince

In the radiant city of Ayodhya, the streets were decorated with fresh marigold garlands, colorful banners, and fragrant incense. King Dasharatha had announced that his eldest and most beloved son, Prince Rama, would be crowned as the new king the following morning.

अयोध्या की पावन नगरी में हर गली ताजे गेंदे के फूलों, रंग-बिरंगी पताकाओं और सुगंधित धूप से सजी हुई थी। महाराज दशरथ ने घोषणा की थी कि अगली सुबह उनके सबसे बड़े और प्रजा के प्रिय राजकुमार राम का राज्याभिषेक होगा।

Everyone rejoiced—except Queen Kaikeyi's scheming maid, Manthara. Poisoning the queen's mind with jealousy, Manthara convinced Kaikeyi that her own son, Bharata, should rule instead. Remembering two boons King Dasharatha had promised her long ago during a battle, Kaikeyi called the king to her chambers.

पूरी अयोध्या खुशी मना रही थी—सिवाय रानी कैकेयी की दासी मंथरा के। मंथरा ने कैकेयी के मन में ईर्ष्या का विष घोल दिया और उन्हें समझाया कि राजगद्दी भरत को मिलनी चाहिए। युद्ध के समय राजा दशरथ द्वारा दिए गए दो वचनों को याद करते हुए, कैकेयी ने राजा को अपने कोपभवन में बुलाया।

With a cold heart, Kaikeyi demanded her two wishes: that Prince Bharata be crowned king, and that Prince Rama be sent into the wild forests for fourteen years of exile. The heartbroken king wept bitterly, collapsed to the floor, and could not bear to speak the harsh words.

कठोर हृदय से कैकेयी ने अपने दो वरदान मांगे: पहला, भरत का राज्याभिषेक हो, और दूसरा, राम को चौदह वर्षों के लिए घने जंगलों में वनवास भेजा जाए। राजा दशरथ का दिल टूट गया, वे रोते हुए जमीन पर गिर पड़े और उनके मुंह से एक शब्द भी नहीं निकला।

When Rama entered and saw his father weeping in sorrow, he gently knelt beside him. When Queen Kaikeyi revealed her demands, Rama did not show a single trace of anger, sadness, or hesitation. A peaceful, loving smile graced his face.

जब राम कक्ष में आए और उन्होंने अपने पिता को शोक में रोते देखा, तो वे उनके पास घुटनों के बल बैठ गए। जब माता कैकेयी ने अपनी मांगें बताईं, तो राम के चेहरे पर क्रोध या दुख की एक भी रेखा नहीं उभरी। उनके मुख पर एक शांत और सौम्य मुस्कान तैर गई।

'A kingdom is nothing compared to fulfilling my father's honor and making my mother happy,' Rama said gently. 'I will joyfully depart for the forest today itself.'

'पिताजी के वचनों की मर्यादा और माता की खुशी के आगे यह राजपाट कुछ भी नहीं है,' राम ने कोमलता से कहा। 'मैं आज ही सहर्ष वन के लिए प्रस्थान करूंगा।'

Removing his golden crown and royal silk garments, Rama put on simple hermit robes of tree bark. Seeing his unshakeable devotion to truth and duty, his loving wife Sita and loyal brother Lakshmana insisted on accompanying him.

अपने सोने के मुकुट और राजसी रेशमी वस्त्रों को त्यागकर, राम ने मुनियों के वल्कल वस्त्र धारण कर लिए। सत्य और धर्म के प्रति उनकी ऐसी निष्ठा देखकर, माता सीता और भाई लक्ष्मण ने भी उनके साथ वन चलने का निश्चय किया।

As Rama walked out of the palace gates with a serene heart, the entire kingdom wept. Rama had proved that upholding dharma, honoring one's parents, and keeping promises are far greater than all the golden thrones in the world.

जब राम शांत मन से राजमहल के द्वार से बाहर निकले, तो पूरी अयोध्या रो पड़ी। राम ने साबित कर दिया था कि धर्म की मर्यादा, माता-पिता की आज्ञा और सत्य का पालन संसार के किसी भी स्वर्ण सिंहासन से कहीं बढ़कर है।
