The Power of Listening

Harvest season had arrived, and seven-year-old Kabir was sitting on the porch steps watching his grandmother in the courtyard. In her hands, Dadi held a wide, woven bamboo winnowing fan, called a Sup.

फसल कटने का समय आ चुका था, और सात साल का कबीर बरामदे की सीढ़ियों पर बैठकर आंगन में अपनी दादी को देख रहा था। दादी के हाथों में बांस का बना एक चौड़ा सूप था।

With a rhythmic flick of her wrists, she tossed golden grains of wheat into the gentle breeze. The heavy, wholesome grains fell straight down into the clean basket, while the dry husks, dust, and tiny stones were carried away by the wind.

वे बड़े सधे हुए हाथों से गेहूं के सुनहरे दानों को हवा में उछाल रही थीं। भारी और अच्छे दाने सीधे नीचे साफ टोकरी में गिर रहे थे, जबकि भूसा, धूल और तिनके हवा के साथ उड़कर दूर जा रहे थे।

Kabir ran over, captivated by the rhythm. 'Dadi, that bamboo fan looks just like the giant ears on Ganpati Bappa's statue!'

कबीर दौड़कर पास आया और उत्सुकता से बोला, 'दादी, यह बांस का सूप तो बिल्कुल गणपति बाप्पा की मूर्ति के बड़े-बड़े कानों जैसा दिखता है!'

Dadi paused, her eyes twinkling with affection. 'You have sharp eyes, Kabir! In our ancient scriptures, Ganesha's ears are compared specifically to a Surpakarna—ears shaped like a winnowing fan.'

दादी रुकीं और प्यार से मुस्कुराईं। 'कबीर, तुम्हारी नजर बहुत तेज है! हमारे शास्त्रों में गणेशजी के कानों को सूर्पकर्ण कहा गया है—यानी सूप जैसे विशाल कान।'

Kabir touched his own small ears. 'Why would Bappa want ears like a grain basket?'

कबीर ने अपने छोटे कानों को छुआ। 'लेकिन बाप्पा के कान सूप जैसे क्यों हैं?'

Dadi set down the basket and sat with him on the step. 'To teach us the greatest secret of wisdom, Kabir. Just like this bamboo fan keeps the nutritious grain and blows away the worthless dust, Ganesha's big ears remind us to listen carefully to everything—our parents, teachers, and kind words—and let hurtful gossip and anger blow harmlessly away.'

दादी ने सूप रखा और कबीर के पास बैठ गईं। 'हमें बुद्धिमानी का सबसे बड़ा सबक सिखाने के लिए, कबीर। जैसे यह सूप अच्छे अनाज को रख लेता है और बेकार धूल-कचरे को उड़ा देता है, वैसे ही गणेशजी के बड़े कान हमें सिखाते हैं कि हमें अच्छी और ज्ञान की बातें सुननी चाहिए, और बुरी व कड़वी बातों को हवा में उड़ा देना चाहिए।'

'And notice something else,' Dadi whispered with a smile. 'Bappa has enormous ears, but a tiny, gentle mouth! That teaches us to listen twice as much as we speak. When we listen with patience, we gain knowledge; when we speak too much, we often lose it.'

'और एक बात और ध्यान से देखो,' दादी ने धीरे से कहा। 'बाप्पा के कान बहुत बड़े हैं, लेकिन मुंह बहुत छोटा है! यह हमें सिखाता है कि हमें बोलना कम और सुनना ज्यादा चाहिए। जब हम सुनते हैं तो ज्ञान बढ़ता है, और जब बहुत बोलते हैं तो हम गलतियां कर बैठते हैं।'

Kabir touched his ears again, smiling thoughtfully. 'So every time I look at Bappa's big ears, I should remember to be a good listener and keep only good thoughts in my head?'

कबीर ने फिर से अपने कान छुए और सोचकर मुस्कुराया। 'तो जब भी मैं बाप्पा के बड़े कान देखूंगा, मुझे याद रहेगा कि मुझे एक अच्छा श्रोता बनना है और केवल अच्छी बातें ही दिल में रखनी हैं?'

'You are already becoming as wise as a little sage,' Dadi laughed warmly, giving Kabir a loving hug.

'तुम तो अभी से एक नन्हे ज्ञानी बन गए हो,' दादी हंस पड़ीं और उन्होंने कबीर को प्यार से गले लगा लिया।
