The King Who Never Broke a Rule

In the royal gardens of Ayodhya, little prince Bharata sat with his grandfather, listening to tales of ancient heroes. Looking up with innocent eyes, Bharata asked, 'Grandfather, in all the stories of kings and sages, why is my elder brother Rama called Maryada Purushottam? What does that long name mean?'

अयोध्या के सुंदर राजमहल के बगीचे में, छोटे राजकुमार भरत अपने दादाजी के पास बैठकर प्राचीन वीरों की कहानियां सुन रहे थे। भरत ने उत्सुकता से पूछा, 'दादाजी, सभी राजाओं और ऋषियों की कहानियों में, मेरे बड़े भाई राम को ही मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम क्यों कहा जाता है? इस नाम का क्या अर्थ है?'

The grandfather smiled gently, placing a loving hand on the young prince's shoulder. 'Maryada means the highest boundary of righteousness, self-control, and honor. And Purushottam means the greatest among human beings. Your brother Rama embodies this title because he lives as an ideal guide in every single relationship.'

दादाजी मुस्कुराए और उन्होंने भरत के कंधे पर प्यार से हाथ रखा। 'मर्यादा का अर्थ है धर्म, संयम और सत्य का सबसे ऊंचा नियम। और पुरुषोत्तम का अर्थ है मनुष्यों में सबसे श्रेष्ठ। तुम्हारे भ्राता राम इस उपाधि के योग्य हैं क्योंकि वे हर रिश्ते में मर्यादा और अच्छाई की मिसाल हैं।'

'As a son,' the grandfather explained, 'when asked to leave the kingdom, Rama renounced his crown without a murmur of complaint, honoring his father's word above all riches. As a brother, he loved you, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna more than his own life.'

'एक पुत्र के रूप में,' दादाजी ने समझाया, 'जब उन्हें वन जाने को कहा गया, तो उन्होंने बिना किसी शिकायत के राजपाट छोड़ दिया और पिता के वचन की रक्षा की। एक भाई के रूप में, वे तुम तीनों भाइयों को अपने प्राणों से भी अधिक प्रेम करते हैं।'

'And look how he treats others,' grandfather continued. 'He embraced Kewat the simple boatman as his dearest friend. He tasted the berries of mother Shabari with genuine gratitude, seeing no difference between kings and commoners. And as a warrior, he never used his bow for revenge, but only to protect the innocent from tyranny.'

'और देखो कि वे दूसरों के साथ कैसा व्यवहार करते हैं,' दादाजी ने आगे कहा। 'उन्होंने केवट जैसे साधारण नाविक को गले से लगा लिया। उन्होंने माता शबरी के बेरों को प्रेम से खाया। और एक योद्धा के रूप में, उन्होंने कभी किसी पर अत्याचार नहीं किया, बल्कि हमेशा पीड़ितों की रक्षा की।'

'Rama showed us that being great does not mean showing off magical powers,' grandfather concluded softly. 'It means keeping your promises, remaining truthful when tested, and respecting every living soul.'

'राम ने हमें सिखाया कि महान होने का मतलब जादुई शक्तियों का प्रदर्शन करना नहीं है,' दादाजी ने कहा। 'इसका मतलब है हर हाल में अपने वादे निभाना, सच की राह पर चलना और हर इंसान का सम्मान करना।'

Bharata folded his hands, his eyes shining with pride and love for his noble brother, promising in his heart to walk in Rama's footsteps forever.

भरत ने हाथ जोड़े, उनकी आँखों में अपने बड़े भाई के प्रति अपार गर्व और श्रद्धा थी, और उन्होंने मन ही मन सदा राम के दिखाए मर्यादा के मार्ग पर चलने का संकल्प लिया।
