Early in the morning, nine-year-old Kabir walked out onto the veranda and saw his father sitting quietly on a woven mat, his legs crossed, eyes closed, breathing deeply and peacefully. Not a muscle twitched on his face.

Kabir waited until his father opened his eyes with a calm smile. 'Papa, I see pictures of Lord Shiva sitting in meditation on Mount Kailash for thousands of years. Shiva is already all-powerful and the master of the universe. Why does he meditate? Who does he pray to?'

His father smiled warmly, pulling Kabir down onto the mat beside him. 'That is a wonderful question, Kabir. Shiva does not meditate to ask for toys, power, or kingdoms. He meditates to connect with the supreme stillness within himself.'

'Think of your mind like a mountain lake,' his father explained, pointing to a glass of clear water. 'When you throw stones into it, the ripples stir up sand and you cannot see the bottom. But when the water is perfectly still, it reflects the blue sky and warm sun with crystal clarity.'

'By meditating,' father continued, 'Shiva shows us that outer noise cannot touch a calm soul. When we quiet our racing thoughts for just a few minutes each day, our worries fade, our minds become sharp, and our hearts fill with unconditional peace.'

Kabir closed his eyes, sat upright, and took three slow, deep breaths. A gentle wave of quiet washed over him, and he smiled: 'I felt the stillness, Papa.'
