Catching a River from the Sky

A long time ago, the sacred river Ganga flowed only through the heavens, cascading past celestial gardens and stars. Down on earth, the lands were parched, and the ancestors of King Bhagiratha lay waiting in sorrow for holy water to purify their resting souls.

बहुत समय पहले, पावन गंगा नदी केवल स्वर्ग लोक में बहती थी—तारों और देव वनों के बीच। उधर धरती पर सूखा पड़ा था और राजा भगीरथ के पूर्वज मुक्ति की प्रतीक्षा में व्याकुल थे, जिन्हें केवल गंगा का पवित्र जल ही शांति दे सकता था।

Determined to save his ancestors and bring life to the earth, King Bhagiratha performed intense penance for thousands of years. Pleased by his unshakeable devotion, Goddess Ganga agreed to descend to earth.

अपने पूर्वजों के उद्धार और धरती पर जीवन लाने के लिए, राजा भगीरथ ने हजारों वर्षों तक घोर तपस्या की। उनकी अटूट भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर मां गंगा धरती पर उतरने को तैयार हो गईं।

However, Ganga warned with proud, roaring thunder: 'If I plunge straight down from heaven, the crushing torrent of my celestial waters will shatter the earth into pieces! Who will catch the torrent of my fall?'

लेकिन गंगा ने अपने प्रचंड वेग के घमंड में कहा: 'यदि मैं स्वर्ग से सीधे धरती पर गिरी, तो मेरे जल का भयानक वेग पृथ्वी को चीरकर पाताल में समा देगा! मेरे इस वेग को कौन थामेगा?'

Only one being in the cosmos possessed the calmness and strength to tame the celestial river—Lord Shiva! Standing firm upon the rocky peaks of the Himalayas, Shiva smiled serenely and opened his thick, matted locks (Jata).

पूरे ब्रह्मांड में केवल एक ही शक्ति थी जो गंगा के उस प्रचंड वेग को संभाल सकती थी—वे थे देवाधिदेव महादेव! हिमालय की चोटी पर शांत खड़े होकर भगवान शिव मुस्कुराए और उन्होंने अपनी घनी जटाएं खोल दीं।

Ganga plunged from the heavens with a deafening roar, seeking to sweep Shiva away in her pride. But the moment she touched his hair, she became completely lost inside his boundless, swirling locks! Shiva gently held the roaring river captive within his hair until all her haughty pride dissolved into serene grace.

गंगा भयंकर गर्जना के साथ स्वर्ग से गिरीं, यह सोचकर कि वे शिवजी को भी बहा ले जाएंगी। लेकिन जैसे ही वे उनकी जटाओं में समाईं, वे उनके घने बालों की भूलभुलैया में खोकर रह गईं! शिवजी ने उस उफनती नदी को शांत कर दिया और उसका सारा घमंड मिटा दिया।

Then, Shiva released Ganga in seven gentle, crystal-clear streams to flow softly down the Himalayan valleys. The sacred river greened the plains, blessed the ancestors, and brought life and sweetness to millions, teaching us that true power is patience and restraint.

इसके बाद शिवजी ने अपनी जटा से गंगा को सात शांत धाराओं में धरती पर बहने दिया। पावन गंगा ने मैदानों को हरा-भरा किया, पूर्वजों को मुक्ति दी और धरती को पावन बना दिया। यह प्रसंग सिखाता है कि असली शक्ति उग्रता में नहीं, बल्कि संयम और धैर्य में होती है।
