The Secret of the Snake Necklace

If you look at pictures of Lord Shiva, you will notice three very unique things: a third eye, a crescent moon, and a big, scary snake wrapped around his neck! This snake is called Vasuki.

But why does a God wear a dangerous snake instead of a beautiful gold necklace? There is a very deep reason.

First, snakes are often feared and chased away by everyone. By letting the King of Snakes rest on his shoulders, Lord Shiva shows that he loves and protects all creatures, even the ones society rejects. He is the Lord of Animals (Pashupati).

Second, a snake is filled with deadly poison. Lord Shiva wraps the snake exactly three times around his neck. This represents the past, the present, and the future.
दूसरा, एक सांप घातक जहर से भरा होता है। भगवान शिव अपनी गर्दन के चारों ओर ठीक तीन बार सांप लपेटते हैं। यह अतीत, वर्तमान और भविष्य का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है।
The snake sitting calmly on his neck shows that Mahadev is completely fearless. He is not afraid of poison or death! He controls the poison, and it cannot harm him. This teaches us that if we keep our minds calm through meditation, negative thoughts (like poison) cannot harm us.
उनकी गर्दन पर शांति से बैठा सांप दर्शाता है कि महादेव पूरी तरह निडर हैं। उन्हें जहर या मौत से डर नहीं लगता! वे जहर को नियंत्रित करते हैं, और यह उन्हें नुकसान नहीं पहुंचा सकता है। यह हमें सिखाता है कि यदि हम ध्यान के माध्यम से अपने मन को शांत रखते हैं, तो नकारात्मक विचार (जहर की तरह) हमें नुकसान नहीं पहुंचा सकते हैं।
