According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu left Vaikuntha and came to earth searching for Goddess Lakshmi after a misunderstanding. He manifested as Srinivasa on the Tirumala hills and married Princess Padmavati. To fund his grand wedding, he took a massive loan from Kubera (the god of wealth). Devotees donate generously to the temple's Hundi to help the Lord repay this cosmic debt, which is said to continue until the end of Kali Yuga.
