The Goddess in Our Courtyard
“Why is a simple green plant worshipped as a Goddess in Hindu homes? 🌿🪴”
Every morning before getting ready for school, eight-year-old Vihaan watched his mother walk out into the sunlit courtyard carrying a small copper pot of water.
She would walk straight to the ornate clay planter resting on a raised stone stand. With gentle care, she watered the leafy green plant, lit a fragrant stick of sandalwood incense, and bowed with deep gratitude.
One crisp autumn morning, Vihaan wrapped his sweater closer and followed her out. 'Ma, we have fragrant rose bushes and bright marigolds in our garden. Why is this little Tulsi plant the only one we pray to every single morning?'
His mother smiled, plucked a small, tender green leaf, gently rolled it between her fingers, and held it to Vihaan's nose. A refreshing, spicy fragrance filled the morning breeze.
'Taste a tiny piece, Vihaan,' she said.
Vihaan placed the leaf on his tongue; it tasted sharp, sweet, and warm. 'Ma, this tastes just like the warm herbal tea you gave me when I had a cough last winter!'
'That is because Tulsi is like a caring mother to every household,' his mother explained with a warm smile. 'Our ancient sages named her Vishnupriya—the beloved of Lord Vishnu—because she protects life. Day and night, she purifies the air around our courtyard, keeps harmful insects away, and heals our bodies with her medicinal power.'
'And when we bow to her,' she added, 'we are thanking nature for quietly watching over our family's health.'
Vihaan looked at the vibrant green leaves shimmering with morning dewdrops. He took the copper pot from his mother's hands and gently poured the remaining cool water at the plant's roots, offering his own silent thank you to the sacred green guardian.
