The Secret Inside Folded Hands

When we meet someone new, or when guests come to our house, what do we do? We bring our two hands together near our chest, bow our heads slightly, and say, 'Namaste!'

जब हम किसी नए व्यक्ति से मिलते हैं, या जब मेहमान हमारे घर आते हैं, तो हम क्या करते हैं? हम अपने दोनों हाथों को अपनी छाती के पास लाते हैं, अपना सिर थोड़ा झुकाते हैं और कहते हैं, 'नमस्ते!'

But why don't we just wave, or shake hands, or give a high-five?

लेकिन हम सिर्फ हाथ क्यों नहीं हिलाते, या हाथ क्यों नहीं मिलाते, या हाई-फाइव क्यों नहीं देते?

The word 'Namaste' comes from the ancient Sanskrit language. 'Nama' means 'I bow', and 'te' means 'to you'. But who are we bowing to? Are we bowing to the person's clothes, or their money, or their job? No!

'नमस्ते' शब्द प्राचीन संस्कृत भाषा से आया है। 'नमः' का अर्थ है 'मैं झुकता हूं', और 'ते' का अर्थ है 'तुम्हारे प्रति'। लेकिन हम किसके सामने झुक रहे हैं? क्या हम व्यक्ति के कपड़ों, या उनके पैसे, या उनकी नौकरी के सामने झुक रहे हैं? नहीं!

In Hindu philosophy, it is believed that a tiny spark of God lives inside every single person's heart. When we say Namaste, we are actually saying: 'The God inside me respects and bows down to the God inside you!'

हिंदू दर्शन में, यह माना जाता है कि भगवान की एक छोटी सी चिंगारी हर एक व्यक्ति के दिल के अंदर रहती है। जब हम नमस्ते कहते हैं, तो हम वास्तव में कह रहे होते हैं: 'मेरे अंदर का भगवान तुम्हारे अंदर के भगवान का सम्मान करता है और उन्हें नमन करता है!'

When we join both our hands together in front of our heart chakra, it connects the right side of our brain to the left side. It brings our mind into a state of total peace. We look at the other person and realize that, deep down, we are all equal and connected.

जब हम अपने दोनों हाथों को अपने हृदय चक्र के सामने एक साथ जोड़ते हैं, तो यह हमारे मस्तिष्क के दाहिने हिस्से को बाएँ हिस्से से जोड़ता है। यह हमारे दिमाग को पूरी शांति की स्थिति में लाता है। हम दूसरे व्यक्ति को देखते हैं और महसूस करते हैं कि गहराई में हम सभी समान हैं और जुड़े हुए हैं।
