The Secret Inside Folded Hands

Eight-year-old Meera was helping her grandmother string fresh orange marigolds on the veranda when the front gate clicked open. It was Sharma Uncle, their kind neighbor, carrying a basket of sweet guavas.

आठ साल की मीरा बरामदे में अपनी दादी के साथ ताजे गेंदे के फूलों की माला गूंथ रही थी, तभी मुख्य दरवाजे की कुंडी बजी। उनके दयालु पड़ोसी शर्मा अंकल हाथ में मीठे अमरूदों की टोकरी लिए मिलने आए थे।

Meera set down her flower garland, stepped forward, pressed her palms together near her heart, bowed her head with a warm smile, and said, 'Namaste, Uncle!'

मीरा ने फूलों की माला रखी, आगे बढ़ी, दोनों हथेलियों को अपने सीने के पास जोड़ा, सिर झुकाकर मुस्कुराते हुए कहा, 'नमस्ते अंकल!'

Sharma Uncle beamed, folded his hands in return, and blessed her warmly. After he sat down for tea with her grandfather, Meera sat beside Dadi and looked at her own hands.

शर्मा अंकल का चेहरा खिल उठा, उन्होंने भी हाथ जोड़कर उत्तर दिया और उसे ढेर सारा आशीर्वाद दिया। जब वे दादाजी के साथ चाय पीने बैठे, तो मीरा दादी के पास आई और अपनी दोनों हथेलियों को देखने लगी।

'Dadi,' Meera whispered, 'in school we wave hello, or give a high-five. Why do we always bring both hands together at our chest to say Namaste?'

'दादी,' मीरा ने धीरे से पूछा, 'स्कूल में तो हम हाथ हिलाकर 'हाय' कहते हैं। लेकिन हम हमेशा दोनों हाथों को सीने के पास जोड़कर 'नमस्ते' क्यों करते हैं?'

Dadi set down her needle and held up her two hands, pressing them together softly. 'Look at your hands, Meera. The right hand represents our active strength, and the left hand represents our quiet kindness. When we join them at our heart, we bring our body and mind into perfect balance.'

दादी ने सुई धागा रखा और अपनी दोनों हथेलियों को कोमलता से आपस में मिलाया। 'मीरा, अपने हाथों को देखो। दायां हाथ हमारी शक्ति का प्रतीक है और बायां हाथ हमारी करुणा का। जब हम इन्हें अपने हृदय के पास जोड़ते हैं, तो हमारा शरीर और मन पूरी तरह संतुलित हो जाते हैं।'

'And the word itself holds a secret treasure,' Dadi continued with a gentle smile. ''Nama-te' comes from Sanskrit, meaning 'not mine, but yours'. When we bow, we are saying: I honor the spark of divine goodness, love, and light that lives inside your heart, just as it lives inside mine.'

'और इस शब्द में एक गहरा रहस्य छिपा है,' दादी ने मुस्कुराते हुए समझाया। ''नमः-ते' संस्कृत का शब्द है, जिसका अर्थ है 'मेरा नहीं, सब आपका'। जब हम झुकते हैं, तो हम कह रहे होते हैं: आपके हृदय में जो ईश्वर का रूप और अच्छाई का प्रकाश है, मैं उसे नमन करती हूँ, जैसा कि वह मेरे भीतर भी है।'

Meera looked at her joined hands, her eyes shining with understanding. 'So whenever I say Namaste, I am greeting the best and most beautiful part of that person?'

'Exactly, my sweet girl,' Dadi said, gently kissing Meera's forehead. 'It teaches us that everyone we meet is special, deserving of respect, and connected to us.'

'बिल्कुल सही, मेरी प्यारी बच्ची,' दादी ने मीरा का माथा चूमते हुए कहा। 'यह हमें सिखाता है कि हर व्यक्ति आदर के योग्य है और हम सब आपस में एक परमात्मा से जुड़े हुए हैं।'
