The Name of the Invincible One

Long ago, the three worlds fell into terrible misery under the cruel rule of a demon named Durgamasura. Cunning and proud, the demon performed severe austerities and stole the sacred books of wisdom—the four Vedas—from the world.
बहुत समय पहले, दुर्गमासुर नाम के एक घमंडी असुर के अत्याचारों से तीनों लोकों में हाहाकार मच गया। उसने बड़ी चालाकी से तपस्या करके संसार से ज्ञान के पावन ग्रंथ—चारों वेद—छीन लिए।
Without sacred wisdom, people forgot how to pray, conduct sacrifices, and live in harmony. For a hundred years, the clouds refused to pour rain. Wells cracked open, green crops withered into yellow dust, and animals and children wept in agonizing thirst and famine.
ज्ञान के लुप्त हो जाने से लोग धर्म और प्रार्थना भूल गए। सौ वर्षों तक बारिश की एक बूंद भी नहीं गिरी। कुएं सूख गए, फसलें राख हो गईं, और भूख-प्यास से पशु-पक्षी और बच्चे तड़पने लगे।
Hearing the desperate prayers of the suffering sages, the Divine Mother manifested before them in a form brimming with boundless compassion, holding one hundred eyes—known as Shatakshi.
संतों और प्रजा की करुण पुकार सुनकर, ममतामयी जगदंबा सौ करुणामयी नेत्रों वाले शताक्षी रूप में प्रकट हुईं।
Seeing her children starve, tears of divine love and grief poured from her hundred eyes for nine days and nights. Those tears became rushing rivers, filled empty lakes, and restored green shoots, cool springs, and abundant vegetables to the starving earth.
अपने बच्चों को भूख से तड़पता देखकर माता के सौ नेत्रों से नौ दिनों तक लगातार आंसुओं की अविरल धारा बही। उन पवित्र आंसुओं से सूखी नदियां भर गईं, हरियाली लौट आई और पूरी धरती पर अन्न और फल लहलहा उठे।
The Mother then confronted Durgamasura in a fierce battle, vanquishing the demon and restoring the sacred Vedas to humanity. Because she destroyed the demon Durgama and rescues devotees from impossible difficulties, she is forever worshipped as Durga—the ultimate refuge of the helpless.
इसके बाद माता ने दुर्गमासुर का वध किया और चारों वेदों को पुनः मानवता को सौंप दिया। चूंकि उन्होंने दुर्गम संकटों को दूर किया और दुर्गमासुर का संहार किया, इसलिए वे सदा के लिए दुर्गा कहलाईं—जो अपने भक्तों के सभी कष्टों को हर लेती हैं।
