In the sacred holy city of Kashi, Lord Shiva once sat with Mata Parvati on the stone ghats above the Ganga. Playfully discussing philosophy, Shiva remarked: 'The physical universe is merely an illusion (Maya). Spiritual truth is eternal; food and worldly matters are not real.'

Mata Parvati, who cares for every living creature like a devoted mother, smiled softly. She knew that while the soul is eternal, a living body cannot pray, work, or seek wisdom without food to nourish it.

To teach a gentle lesson, the Goddess quietly withdrew her presence from the material world. Instantly, all food vanished! The fields dried into cracked mud, fruit trees dropped their leaves, kitchens grew silent, and across the three worlds, everyone—from tiny birds to mighty sages—cried out in hunger.

Even Lord Shiva and his followers felt the sharp pangs of hunger in their bellies. Shiva immediately recognized his mistake: nature and spiritual truth are two halves of the same reality; without food, life cannot endure.

Word spread that in Kashi, a divine queen had appeared serving warm, delicious food from a golden vessel to anyone who arrived. Shiva walked to her palace, holding out his clay begging bowl (Bhiksha-patra).

There stood Mata Parvati as Maa Annapurna—the Giver of Nourishment. Smiling tenderly, she ladled sweet, golden rice into Shiva’s bowl, promising that in the holy city of Kashi, no soul would ever go to sleep hungry. This is why we treat every meal as a sacred blessing and thank Maa Annapurna before eating.
