The Night of the Infinite Light
“Why does Lord Shiva stay awake all night while the whole world sleeps? 🕉️🌙”
Mahashivratri means 'The Great Night of Shiva'. There are many reasons why this night is special. One story tells us that this was the day when Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati got married! Another story says this was the night when Shiva performed his cosmic dance of creation.
महाशिवरात्रि का अर्थ है 'शिव की महान रात'। यह रात क्यों खास है, इसके कई कारण हैं। एक कहानी हमें बताती है कि यह वही दिन था जब भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती का विवाह हुआ था! एक और कहानी कहती है कि यह वही रात थी जब शिव ने सृष्टि का अपना ब्रह्मांडीय नृत्य किया था।
But the most exciting story is about the **Churning of the Ocean**. When the Gods and demons were churning the ocean to find the nectar of immortality, a terrible poison called 'Halahala' came out first. This poison was so dangerous that it could destroy the entire universe!
लेकिन सबसे रोमांचक कहानी **समुद्र मंथन** की है। जब देवता और असुर अमरता का अमृत खोजने के लिए समुद्र मंथन कर रहे थे, तो सबसे पहले 'हलाहल' नाम का एक भयानक विष निकला। यह विष इतना खतरनाक था कि यह पूरे ब्रह्मांड को नष्ट कर सकता था!
Everyone was terrified. They ran to Lord Shiva for help. To save everyone, Shiva did something incredibly brave. He took the poison and drank it! But he didn't swallow it. He held it in his throat. The poison was so strong that it turned his throat blue. This is why he is called **Neelkanth** (the one with the blue throat).
हर कोई डरा हुआ था। वे मदद के लिए भगवान शिव के पास दौड़े। सबको बचाने के लिए शिव ने कुछ बहुत ही साहसी काम किया। उन्होंने विष लिया और उसे पी लिया! लेकिन उन्होंने उसे निगला नहीं। उन्होंने उसे अपने गले में ही रोक लिया। विष इतना प्रबल था कि उसने उनके गले को नीला कर दिया। यही कारण है कि उन्हें **नीलकंठ** (नीले गले वाले) कहा जाता है।
On Mahashivratri, we stay awake all night to show our gratitude and to meditate. It is a night to overcome our 'poisonous' thoughts—like anger and greed—and fill our hearts with the light of Shiva's wisdom.
महाशिवरात्रि पर, हम अपना आभार व्यक्त करने और ध्यान करने के लिए पूरी रात जागते हैं। यह हमारे 'विषैले' विचारों—जैसे क्रोध और लोभ—पर विजय पाने और अपने हृदय को शिव के ज्ञान के प्रकाश से भरने की रात है।
