The Night of the Infinite Light

Every year on the fourteenth night of the dark half of Phalguna, temples across the land resonate with the chant 'Om Namah Shivaya'. This holy night of deep meditation and prayer is Mahashivratri—the Great Night of Lord Shiva.

हर साल फाल्गुन मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी की रात को, चारों ओर 'ॐ नमः शिवाय' का पावन जयघोष गूंजता है। ध्यान, जागरण और प्रार्थना की यह पावन रात महाशिवरात्रि कहलाती है—अर्थात भगवान शिव की महान रात्रि।

A touching parable illustrates the boundless, unconditional mercy of Lord Shiva on this sacred night. Long ago, a poor hunter named Lubdhaka was caught in a dense forest after nightfall. With predatory beasts prowling in the dark, he climbed high into the branches of a wild Bilva (Bael) tree to stay safe.

इस रात की महिमा को समझाने वाली एक सुंदर कथा मिलती है। बहुत समय पहले, लुब्धक नाम का एक गरीब शिकारी घने जंगल में रात के अंधेरे में फंस गया। जंगली जानवरों के डर से वह अपनी जान बचाने के लिए एक बेलपत्र के पेड़ पर चढ़ गया।

Cold, hungry, and terrified of falling asleep and slipping from the tree, Lubdhaka kept himself awake by plucking fresh Bilva leaves one by one and letting them drop down into the darkness, weeping over his helpless family.

ठंड, भूख और नीचे गिरने के डर से खुद को जगाए रखने के लिए, वह पेड़ से बेलपत्र के पत्ते तोड़-तोड़कर नीचे गिराता रहा और अपने भूखे परिवार की चिंता में आंसू बहाता रहा।

Unbeknownst to him, resting directly beneath the tree in the damp earth was a forgotten stone Shiva Lingam! Throughout the entire night, the hunter’s tears and fresh green Bilva leaves rained down upon the sacred stone, completing a night-long fast, vigil, and offering.

वह नहीं जानता था कि ठीक उसी पेड़ के नीचे जमीन पर एक प्राचीन शिवलिंग स्थापित था! रात भर अनजाने में ही सही, उस शिकारी के आंसू और बेलपत्र सीधे उस शिवलिंग पर गिरते रहे, जिससे उसका अनजाने में ही व्रत और पूजन संपन्न हो गया।

At dawn, Lord Shiva appeared in radiant glory, touched by the unintentional offerings made with a sincere, wakeful heart. Shiva blessed the hunter with eternal peace. Mahashivratri reminds us that God does not look for grand displays, but rewards the simplest gesture of awareness and devotion.

सुबह होते ही देवाधिदेव महादेव प्रकट हुए और उस शिकारी की अनजाने में की गई पूजा और जागरण से प्रसन्न होकर उसे मोक्ष का वरदान दिया। महाशिवरात्रि हमें सिखाती है कि भोलेनाथ दिखावे के भूखे नहीं हैं, वे तो सच्चे और विनीत मन के छोटे से समर्पण से भी रीझ जाते हैं।
