The Festival of the Returning Sun
“Why do we fly kites and eat sesame sweets in the middle of winter? 🪁🍡”
On a crisp, sunny January morning, nine-year-old Kabir and his sister rushed up the stairs to their rooftop terrace. The winter sky was a clear, brilliant azure, filled with hundreds of diamond-shaped paper kites of crimson, emerald, gold, and sapphire dancing in the breeze.
'Look, Kabir! Makar Sankranti is here!' his sister cheered as they launched their own bright orange kite, watching it catch the wind and soar toward the sun.
Their grandmother walked onto the terrace carrying a bronze tray filled with round, sweet laddoos made of roasted sesame seeds (Til) and rich golden jaggery (Gud). Handing them each a warm sweet, Dadi smiled: 'Til-gud ghya, goad-goad bola!'
'What does that mean, Dadi?' Kabir asked, savoring the nutty, sweet crunch.
'It means: Eat these sweet sesame seeds and speak only sweet, gentle words to everyone,' Dadi explained with warmth. 'Today, the Sun God begins his journey northward, entering the constellation of Makara (Capricorn)—a sacred time called Uttarayan. The cold winter nights begin to shorten, and the days grow longer, warmer, and brighter.'
'Our farmers harvest their crops, and we thank Surya Dev for his life-giving warmth,' Dadi added, pointing to the sky. 'And our kites remind us that our thoughts and dreams should always soar high toward the light.'
