The Quickest Game of Hide and Seek

As Hanuman soared high across the southern ocean toward Lanka, the divine beings of the heavens wished to test his wit and resolve. They summoned Surasa, the mother of the sea serpents, and asked her to test the flying messenger.

जब हनुमानजी लंका की ओर समुद्र के ऊपर उड़ रहे थे, तो देवताओं ने उनकी बुद्धि और धैर्य की परीक्षा लेने का विचार किया। उन्होंने नागमाता सुरसा को बुलाया और उनसे हनुमान के मार्ग में जाने का आग्रह किया।

Rising from the churning ocean like a towering aquatic mountain, Surasa spread her terrifying visage across the sky. 'Stop, monkey!' she hissed in a voice of rumbling thunder. 'The gods have granted me a boon that any traveler crossing this sea must enter my mouth as my food!'

समुद्र की लहरों को चीरती हुई सुरसा एक विशाल पर्वत की तरह सामने आ खड़ी हुई। 'रुक जा वानर!' उसने गरजते हुए कहा। 'देवताओं ने मुझे वरदान दिया है कि जो भी इस समुद्र से गुजरेगा, उसे मेरे मुख में प्रवेश करना होगा!'

Hanuman paused mid-air, folding his hands politely. 'Mother, I am on an urgent mission of service for Lord Rama to find Mother Sita. Let me complete my duty first, and I promise to return and enter your mouth willingly.'

हनुमानजी हवा में ही हाथ जोड़कर विनम्रता से बोले, 'हे माता, मैं प्रभु राम के कार्य से माता सीता की खोज में जा रहा हूँ। मुझे अपना कर्तव्य पूरा करने दें, लौटते समय मैं स्वयं आपके मुख में आ जाऊंगा।'

Surasa shook her scaly head. 'No! You must enter now!' She opened her jaws wide—one league across. Hanuman smiled and expanded his own body to two leagues! Surasa stretched her jaws to four leagues. Hanuman grew to eight leagues!

सुरसा नहीं मानी। उसने अपना मुख एक योजन चौड़ा खोल दिया। हनुमानजी मुस्कुराए और उन्होंने अपना शरीर दो योजन बढ़ा लिया! सुरसा ने चार योजन किया, तो हनुमानजी आठ योजन के हो गए!

The game went on until Surasa's mouth was a colossal cavern stretching across the entire horizon. Then, in the blink of an eye, Hanuman shrank himself down to the tiny size of a thumb!

यह क्रम चलता रहा जब तक कि सुरसा का मुख आसमान जितना विशाल नहीं हो गया। तभी, पलक झपकते ही हनुमानजी ने खुद को अंगूठे जितना छोटा बना लिया!

Darting like a lightning bug, Hanuman flew inside her cavernous mouth, tapped her tongue, and flew right back out into the open sky before she could even snap her jaws shut.

बिजली की तेजी से वे उसके मुख के भीतर घुसे, जीभ को स्पर्श किया और इससे पहले कि वह मुंह बंद कर पाती, वे बाहर निकल आए।

'I have honored your boon and entered your mouth, Mother,' Hanuman said with a polite bow. Surasa smiled with immense admiration, shedding her terrifying form: 'You possess both boundless strength and unmatched intellect, Hanuman. Go forth, and victory shall be yours!'

'माता, मैंने आपके वरदान का सम्मान करते हुए आपके मुख में प्रवेश कर लिया है,' हनुमानजी ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा। सुरसा उनकी बुद्धिमानी से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुई और उसने उन्हें आशीर्वाद दिया: 'हनुमान, तुम बलवान भी हो और परम बुद्धिमान भी। जाओ, तुम्हारी विजय निश्चित है!'
