The Boatman Who Was Smarter Than a King

When Lord Rama was going to the forest, he reached the banks of the mighty river Ganga. He needed to cross the water to go further. He saw a boatman named Kewat and asked, 'Friend, can you take us to the other side?'

जब भगवान राम जंगल जा रहे थे, तो वे विशाल गंगा नदी के किनारे पहुँचे। उन्हें आगे बढ़ने के लिए पानी पार करना था। उन्होंने केवट नाम के एक नाविक को देखा और पूछा, 'मित्र, क्या तुम हमें दूसरी तरफ ले जा सकते हो?'

Kewat looked at Lord Rama and smiled, but he said something strange. 'My Lord, I have heard a story about your feet. They say your feet turned a stone into a woman (Ahalya)! My boat is made of wood. What if your feet touch my boat and it turns into a woman too? How will I earn my living?'

केवट ने भगवान राम की ओर देखा और मुस्कुराया, लेकिन उसने कुछ अजीब कहा। 'मेरे प्रभु, मैंने आपके चरणों के बारे में एक कहानी सुनी है। वे कहते हैं कि आपके चरणों ने एक पत्थर को स्त्री (अहल्या) बना दिया! मेरी नाव लकड़ी की बनी है। क्या होगा अगर आपके पैर मेरी नाव को छू लें और वह भी एक स्त्री बन जाए? फिर मैं अपनी जीविका कैसे कमाऊँगा?'

Lord Rama laughed at the boatman's simple and sweet logic. Kewat continued, 'I will only let you in my boat if you allow me to wash your feet first. I want to wash away all the magic dust so my boat stays a boat!'

नाविक के सरल और मधुर तर्क पर भगवान राम हँस पड़े। केवट ने आगे कहा, 'मैं आपको अपनी नाव में तभी बैठने दूँगा जब आप मुझे पहले अपने पैर धोने देंगे। मैं सारी जादुई धूल धोना चाहता हूँ ताकि मेरी नाव नाव ही बनी रहे!'

Rama agreed. Kewat washed Rama's feet with great love and care. After they crossed the river, Sita tried to give Kewat a precious ring as payment. But Kewat refused. 'My Lord,' he said, 'we are in the same profession. I take people across the water, and you take souls across the ocean of life. One professional never charges another!'

राम मान गए। केवट ने बड़े प्रेम और श्रद्धा से राम के चरण धोए। नदी पार करने के बाद, सीता ने केवट को भुगतान के रूप में एक बहुमूल्य अंगूठी देने की कोशिश की। लेकिन केवट ने मना कर दिया। उन्होंने कहा, 'मेरे प्रभु, हम एक ही पेशे में हैं। मैं लोगों को पानी के पार ले जाता हूँ, और आप आत्माओं को जीवन के सागर के पार ले जाते हैं। एक पेशेवर दूसरे से कभी शुल्क नहीं लेता!'
