The Boatman Who Was Smarter Than a King

On their journey into exile, Lord Rama, Mother Sita, and Lakshmana walked through the green meadows until they reached the banks of the mighty river Ganga. The water was broad, deep, and flowing swiftly toward the sea.

वनवास की यात्रा पर निकले भगवान राम, माता सीता और लक्ष्मण चलते-चलते पावन गंगा नदी के किनारे पहुंचे। गंगा का पाट बहुत चौड़ा, गहरा और उसकी धारा अत्यंत तेज थी।

Moored near the reeds was a simple wooden boat belonging to Kewat, a humble boatman of the river. Lord Rama smiled warmly and called out, 'Brother boatman, will you ferry us across to the other shore?'

किनारे पर केवट नाम के एक सीधे-सादे नाविक की लकड़ी की नाव बंधी थी। भगवान राम ने मुस्कुराते हुए आवाज दी, 'हे केवट भाई, क्या तुम हमें नदी के उस पार पहुंचा दोगे?'

Kewat recognized the divine radiance of Rama at once, but his devoted heart devised a sweet and clever plan. Folding his hands, he replied with a serious face: 'My Lord, I have heard the rumors about your magical feet! They say the dust of your feet turned a cold stone into a living woman, Ahalya.'

केवट ने प्रभु राम के दिव्य रूप को तुरंत पहचान लिया, लेकिन उसके प्रेमी भक्त मन ने एक बड़ी सुंदर युक्ति सोची। उसने हाथ जोड़कर बड़ी गंभीरता से कहा: 'प्रभु, मैंने आपके चरणों की महिमा सुनी है! लोग कहते हैं कि आपके चरणों की धूल छूते ही एक कठोर पत्थर सुंदर स्त्री (अहल्या) बन गई थी।'

'My boat is made of humble wood,' Kewat continued with a twinkle in his eye. 'What if your feet touch my boat and it turns into a woman too? How will I earn bread for my children? I cannot let you board my boat unless you permit me to wash the magical dust from your feet first!'

'मेरी यह नाव तो साधारण लकड़ी की है,' केवट ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा। 'अगर आपके चरण छूते ही मेरी नाव भी स्त्री बन गई, तो मैं क्या करूंगा? मैं अपने बाल-बच्चों का पेट कैसे पालूंगा? इसलिए जब तक मैं आपके चरणों की वह जादुई धूल धो न लूँ, मैं आपको अपनी नाव पर नहीं चढ़ा सकता!'

Lord Rama laughed heartily at the boatman's innocent, witty love and happily granted his wish. Kewat brought a wooden trough filled with clean water, washed Rama’s lotus feet with tender reverence, and sprinkled the sacred water upon his own head and his family.

भगवान राम उस सीधे-सादे भक्त के भोले प्रेम पर हंस पड़े और उन्होंने सहर्ष अनुमति दे दी। केवट ने काठ के बर्तन में जल लाकर बड़े आदर से राम के चरण धोए, और उस चरणामृत को अपने और अपने परिवार के सिर पर छिड़क कर जीवन धन्य कर लिया।

Kewat rowed them safely across the sparkling river. On the opposite bank, Mother Sita wished to reward him and offered her precious gemstone ring. But Kewat stepped back with tears in his eyes.

केवट ने बड़े आनंद से नाव चलाकर उन्हें गंगा पार कराई। उस पार पहुंचकर माता सीता ने उतराई के रूप में अपनी रत्नजड़ित अंगूठी देनी चाही। लेकिन केवट ने हाथ जोड़कर पीछे कदम हटा लिए।

'No, my Lord,' Kewat whispered softly. 'We are in the very same trade! I ferry people across this river of water, and you ferry souls across the ocean of worldly life. When my time comes to cross the ocean of life, grant me safe passage—one boatman never charges another!'

'नहीं प्रभु,' केवट ने रुंधे गले से कहा। 'हम दोनों तो एक ही काम करते हैं! मैं लोगों को इस नदी के पार उतारता हूँ, और आप भवसागर के पार उतारते हैं। जब मेरा अंतिम समय आए, तो मुझे उस भवसागर से पार लगा देना—एक नाविक दूसरे नाविक से कभी किराया नहीं लेता!'

Lord Rama embraced the humble boatman with boundless love, showing that the sweetest treasure in the universe is simple, unshakeable faith.

भगवान राम ने उस सच्चे भक्त को बड़े प्रेम से गले लगा लिया, और सिद्ध कर दिया कि संसार में सच्चे और निष्कपट प्रेम से बढ़कर कोई धन नहीं है।
