The Secret of the Blue Throat

In an ancient age, the gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuras) agreed to churn the vast cosmic Ocean of Milk to retrieve the nectar of immortality (Amrita). Using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the great serpent Vasuki as the rope, they pulled back and forth with colossal strength.

प्राचीन काल में, देवताओं और दानवों ने अमरता का अमृत पाने के लिए विशाल क्षीरसागर का मंथन करने का निश्चय किया। मंदराचल पर्वत को मथानी और नागराज वासुकी को रस्सी बनाकर दोनों पक्षों ने पूरी ताकत से मंथन शुरू किया।

Suddenly, before any gems or nectar could emerge, the ocean began to bubble with black, smoking fury. From the depths rose Halahala—a deadly, burning cosmic poison so toxic that its blazing fumes began scorching the three worlds, threatening to extinguish all life in the universe.

तभी अमृत निकलने से पहले समुद्र से काला, जहरीला धुआं उठने लगा। गहराइयों से हलाहल नामक एक भयंकर विष निकला, जिसकी विषाक्त लपटें इतनी भयानक थीं कि तीनों लोकों में सभी प्राणी झुलसने लगे और सृष्टि का अंत निकट दिखने लगा।

Terrified, both gods and demons fled. No one could endure the heat of the poison. With nowhere left to turn, they rushed to Mount Kailash, falling at the feet of Lord Shiva: 'Save us, Mahadeva! Only your boundless grace can rescue creation!'

भयभीत होकर देवता और असुर सब भाग खड़े हुए। उस विष की ज्वाला कोई सहन नहीं कर सकता था। कोई उपाय न देखकर वे कैलाश पहुंचे और शिवजी के चरणों में गिर पड़े: 'हे महादेव, हमारी रक्षा करें! केवल आपकी कृपा ही इस संसार को बचा सकती है!'

Looking upon creation with fatherly compassion, Lord Shiva did not hesitate. Cupping the boiling poison in his bare palms, he brought it to his lips and swallowed it without fear to protect his children.

संसार के प्रति असीम दया से भरकर, भगवान शिव ने एक पल भी संकोच नहीं किया। उन्होंने उस खौलते हुए विष को अपनी हथेलियों में समेटा और पूरी सृष्टि की रक्षा के लिए उसे पी लिया।

Seeing this, Mata Parvati rushed forward and gently pressed her hands against Shiva’s throat, preventing the lethal venom from descending into his stomach. The poison was held safely in his throat, turning his neck a luminous, beautiful sapphire-blue.

यह देखकर माता पार्वती तुरंत आगे आईं और उन्होंने शिवजी के गले को अपने हाथों से थाम लिया, ताकि वह विष उनके पेट में न जा सके। विष उनके कंठ में ही ठहर गया, जिससे उनका गला सुंदर नीले रंग का हो गया।

The universe was saved, and all beings sang the praises of Neelkantha—the Blue-Throated Savior. Lord Shiva showed the world the highest ideal of love: bearing pain upon oneself so that others may live in peace and joy.

सृष्टि बच गई और सभी प्राणी नीलकंठ महादेव की जयकार करने लगे। भगवान शिव ने प्रेम और त्याग का सबसे बड़ा उदाहरण प्रस्तुत किया: दूसरों को जीवन और सुख देने के लिए खुद विष का घूंट पी लेना।
